I have spent the past 3 or so years of my career trying to tap further into the “clean beauty” phenomenon. Some brands tout an all-natural claim, while others keep it conservative with something along the lines of ingredient-conscious. In most cases, I am a fan of the latter, as it is much more objective and my clients are less likely to have the FDA come knocking on their door. Having a career in product development and regulatory compliance always has me leaning toward a more conservative claim, unless of course it can be backed up by testing. Alas, with an involuntary registration system here in the US, many false claims can be (and are) made. But let’s leave that for another post…

Clean everything is huge in 2017. Clean eating, clean beauty, clean living… you get it. We are all becoming more aware and tuned in to the things we put in and on our bodies.

Finding your best health-conscious beauty starts with finding what is important to YOU.

Do you want to avoid parabens? Not too sure about the lack of safety testing done on phenoxyethanol? Does D&C Red No. 6 irritate your skin? These are the types of questions we need to ask ourselves when finding our perfect beauty regimen. I personally avoid harsh surfactants. Why, you ask? Commonly used surfactants Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Sodium Laureth Sulfate have proven time and time again to irritate my skin. I have super dry skin and this just dries it out more. No matter how much moisturizer I use, it seems as though these sulfates suck my skin dry.

Here are a few brands honing in on some of the top concerns in health-conscious beauty today. These brands go beyond the standard marketing claim, and there is passion behind what they sell. I use products on a day-to-day basis, so they all get a gold star from me!

If you’re looking for beauty and skin care that takes a stand, Beautycounter is for you.

Their mission is “to get safer products in the hands of everyone”. What Beautycounter does is truly great. They are well-researched, which is a breath of fresh air in this industry, and their Never List™ really focuses on questionable or harmful chemicals.

No aluminum? No sweat. Try LaVanila.

With links to breast cancer, deodorants containing aluminum salts (anti-perspirants) are being avoided like the plague. Although the National Cancer Institute is not “aware of any conclusive evidence”, many consumers are swayed by the press and choose to go aluminum-free. I personally use LaVanila’s The Healthy Deodorant in Lavender Vanilla and I’m in love.

Is ECOCERT® what you’re after? One Love Organics is a good choice.

Not only are their products super sweet, but the story behind the brand melts my heart. OLO has a mission to use only the highest quality, most effective ingredients that directly benefit the skin. Their choice to manufacture in an ECOCERT® facility provides third-party assurance that their products’ origins and path from source to shelf are of the highest quality, certified organic, and environmentally friendly.
